Carmody Groarke to transform landmark building for S1 Artspace, Sheffield
Carmody Groarke will be transforming the Grade II Listed former Yorkshire Bank building in Castlegate, Sheffield into a vibrant new cultural venue for S1 Artspace.
Built in 1871 as Sheffield's Head General Post Office, the sandstone building has witnessed the city's evolution – serving as the Sheffield Stock Exchange for over 50 years before becoming a Yorkshire Bank branch until 2014.
Since its foundation by Sheffield artists in 1995, S1 Artspace has supported over 250 artists through temporary studios, and presented nationally recognised exhibitions.
Carmody Groarke will restore the landmark and repurpose it as the organisation's first permanent home, securing a sustainable future for the charity to champion contemporary art for years to come. Initial designs are complete with public galleries across two historic floors, workspace for artists and creatives, a gallery shop showcasing local makers, and an independent basement bar.
The project forms a cornerstone of Castlegate's wider cultural regeneration, joining neighbours including Harmony Works, Sheffield Hallam's Creative Industries Institute, and the redeveloped castle site.
A public consultation will take place at the end of October.
