A new family home is created from the lateral conversion of two early Victorian houses. Resisting the temptation to dramatically re-model the proportions of the existing Victorian interior, the houses were carefully restored and a new extension at garden level was added to link the houses.
Reacting to the artist-client's obsession for daylight, the design of the extension is formed around very large windows which create an open plan counterpoint to the organisation of the original houses, improve connection of living space to garden and increase patterns of living within the enlarged house.
