Carmody Groarke were commissioned by The Architecture Foundation to design a very low cost fitout for the ongoing programme of exhibitions and events, as well as offices for their 12 permanent staff. The site is a ground floor shop-fronted space within an Edwardian warehouse on Tooley Street, close to Tower Bridge, London.
Carmody Groarke's response has been to make the "installation" entirely from plywood to form spaces and furniture to the bespoke requirements of the Architecture Foundation. A strong connectivity between the exhibition and workspace areas is achieved with an open plan arrangement, reinforced by a simple grid pattern of fluorescent lighting crossing over both spaces. The intention is that the fit-out is of very robust yet provisional character, encouraging unselfconscious use and adaptation for future project programming.
