The rehabilitation of a derelict underground public lavatory creates a new exhibition space, located on the north bank of the Thames between the Houses of Parliament and Tate Britain, in which to exhibit and debate media that is independent of professional or institutional accountability.
The design proposes a refurbishment of the existing top-lit public convenience for gallery display and small lectures. A new volume is added on to the existing structure to provide further display opportunities and a "front door" visible from road and river. These two spaces provide a destinational event venue, intended to accommodate a programme of ticketed lectures as well as attracting passers-by to look in and visit temporary exhibitions.
The lightweight "beacon" pavilion is a deliberate counterpart to the solid granite form and space of the existing toilet block and bridge structure.
