Parachute Pavilion
PEER Gallery
A new 1000m2 visitor attraction pavilion floats above the Coney Island promenade beside the landmark parachute-ride and orientates the new Coney Island masterplan toward the Atlantic Ocean.
The new pavilion it becomes a landmark in its own right yet it also relates directly to its towering neighbour by forming a new public space as an extension of the Riegelmann Boardwalk promenade. All the surfaces of the pavilion: floors, walls and ceilings, are punctuated with deliberately aligned voids and windows to frame views that link back towards the Parachute Ride and to the evocative context of the ocean.
This project won first place in the open competition for the 2005 inaugural "New York Prize for Architecture" awarded by the Van Alen Institute and is being developed with the Economic Development Corporation as a key component of the masterplan. The competition-winning proposal also formed the centerpiece of the Van Alen Institute's exhibition (exhibition design also by Carmody Groarke) on the Parachute Pavilion Competition and the subsequent publication by Princeton Architectural Press, "Coney Island - The Parachute Pavilion Competition".
