The competition-winning design proposes a new entrance building to extend the facilities for the "Showroom" cinema and "Workstation" managed offices and create a new strong identity for The Sheffield Festival Centre.
The building's language is defined by very large scaled windows and terraced forms. The design of the simple, robust entrance building within the context of the original warehouse aims to architecturally unite the constituent users of the building with the new additions whilst creating a building that feels substantially public. New cinema spaces are clustered in the semi-underground dark space of the basement, whilst the doubling of the managed creative workspace is located above the existing building to take opportunities of daylight and panoramic views over the city.
The public spaces, including a new entrance for all building users and enlarged bar, sit in-between cinema and office and increase the active street frontage at ground level. These and habitable roof terraces reinforce the Festival Centre's public nature.
