The project examines the reuse of the crypt spaces beneath the majestic Christ Church Spitalfields - widely regarded as Nicholas Hawksmoor's finest baroque church. The crypt is already a resource that is used 7-days a week by the parish, wider multicultural community and hired for corporate events but is in desperate need of repair.
The starting point was to open up the crypt to as much light and air as the historic architecture would allow. Thereafter we intended to create a series of very discrete oak-lined rooms to create a sense of simple order to the underground space. Their flexible arrangement will enable activities of an event or prayer based nature to take place within the crypt simultaneously. The new space mixes the contemporary religious and secular requirements of the church without de-stabilising or threatening the character of the magnificent Hawksmoor vaulted spaces.
