Osnaburgh Street Pavilion
Sheffield Festival Centre
This new pavilion is a major intervention in the public realm of Regents Place. It acts as a solitaire within the Osnaburgh Street masterplan and clearly marks each end of Soane Street from both its approaches, intensifying the experience of movement through the new avenue as part of the new development.
The steel rods represent a copse of ornamental trees supporting a shimmering canopy eight metres above the streetscape. Pathways are defined within the pavilion by removing clusters of the rod structure, creating generous spaces and seating areas. These pathways reveal various densities of vertical rods that shimmer in sunlight by day and contain intense projected light by night, generating a visual moire effect for passers by. At night the visual transparency of the structure is reinforced by up-lighting the clusters of rods - the pavilion literally appears to "hold" light within its structure.
The project was won resulting from a two-stage competition run by British Land and The Architecture Foundation.
